Pilates Teacher Training: Where Do I Begin

What are the pre-requisites before starting Pilates Teacher Training?

You’ll need to do at least 30 hours of pilates prior to starting the course. This does not have to be done at Breathe but ideally at a studio that teaches the STOTT PILATES method. You’ll also need a working knowledge of the anatomy. However, if you don’t have it, we do have an anatomy workshop that you can take.

What is the process for Pilates Teacher Training?

You can start with either the Intensive Mat Plus (IMP) or the Intensive Reformer (IR) followed by the Intensive Cadillac, Chair & Barrel (ICCB). After the level 1 exam, you’ll be a fully certified level 1 STOTT PILATES instructor. You can find out more information on our Instructor Training page

Should I be able to master all exercises before enrolling in Teacher Training?

No, you do not have to but you’ll at least have to know what the exercise is about.

Can I combine Pilates Teacher Training as well as my full time job?

Yes, you can. We have 2 types of courses available. One that runs through the week from 12-6pm and a weekend course that is longer but only happens on Saturdays and Sundays. You’ll need to sacrifice 1 or 2 weekdays during the weekend course.

What books should I be reading alongside my Teacher Training?

Trail guide to the body and muscles – found here

How much time should I invest in training per week after the course?

For the mat course, you will need at least a minimum of 10 hours of observation, minimum of 30 hours of physical review and minimum of 15 hours of practice teaching. These hours increase with the reformer, Cadillac, chair and barrel course.

Can I start teaching straight away after passing my exam?

This really depends on the studio you work with. Some may allow you to start right away after the course without the exams. If you do not take the exams, you’ll be a STOTT Pilates trained instructor. After completing the exams, you will be a certified STOTT Pilates instructor.

At Breathe, we require our instructors to undergo 2 interviews and an in house training program you’ll need to complete and pass before teaching at Breathe.
Your first interview will be during the course itself. Our instructor trainer and education director, Thicha will be looking for the best instructors in the course and she’ll put your names up as potential hires.
Your second interview will focus on character and commitment. At Breathe, we want to ensure that we have the best quality as well as a team of supportive instructors.
Lastly, the in house training is a training program, consisting of 3 levels of mocks and exams, that cover a variety of conditions and programming. There will be discussions as well as case studies and tips on how to improve as an instructor.
