Clinical Pilates

Using exercises and props, this class is designed to help you develop maximum body control, flexibility and strength throughout your joints’ full range of motion, improving overall joint mobility and longevity.

Created by Breathe Education Director, Thicha Srivisal

Clinical Pilates is based on the original Pilates technique created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century. Clinical Pilates is used to rehabilitate patients after an injury or surgery. It differs from Pilates because it considers an individual’s particular ailments and physical demands to create a personalised rehabilitation programme. Clinical Pilates focuses on retraining movement patterns with greater abdominal control, body awareness, and breathing techniques. Focusing on the quality of each posture/movement and the integration of the entire body is crucial to the objectives of Clinical Pilates. This makes Clinical Pilates an excellent therapy option for strengthening core muscles and keeping them conditioned.

Clinical Pilates classes at Breathe are led by a Rehabilitative Pilates certified instructor who has had the proper training and specialisation in injury management and prevention. An expert certified physiotherapist will also closely assess your physical condition before recommending a class. This ensures that all activities covered are suited to your needs. Moreover, these classes are often conducted as one-on-one supervised sessions for optimal results.

Clinical Pilates  Benefits

1. Build Core Strength

Clinical Pilates is an excellent place to start if someone wants to increase strength in a low-impact approach. You’ll gain strength while also improving flexibility and balance, taking into mind the overall health of your body. Clinical Pilates will also strengthen the pelvic floor and other core muscles. Our professional Pilates classes at Breathe are designed to target specific muscles to increase core strength. These classes are also done under the supervision of Health Professionals such as a physiotherapist or doctor. Strongly focusing on the latest research and at times including training using real-time ultrasound to assess muscle activation at specific parts of the body, we ensure that we are constantly on top of our game.

2. Increase Flexibility and Maintain Balance

Flexibility is extremely important for your health and well-being. A Clinical Pilates class will progressively enhance flexibility while simultaneously increasing strength around the joints to improve stability and flexibility. With the implementation of corrective exercises, movement retraining, and strengthening, Clinical Pilates will help you regain full function over time.

3. Injury Rehabilitation

Muscles can become weak and lose their normal movement patterns as a result of injury or surgery. Clinical Pilates develops and re-trains muscles to operate when and how they are needed, making these classes useful for injury rehabilitation. Working with a qualified Physiotherapist, our Breathe Clinical Pilates instructors will design exercises that are precisely matched to your needs. Maintaining tight communication within the multidisciplinary team, progress is constantly tracked to support client recovery.

4. Promotes Body Awareness

Clinical Pilates requires you to pay attention to your movements while also managing your breathing and stability. As you partake in Clinical Pilates, you will become more aware of how your body is feeling. Moreover, the versatility of the exercises taught during Clinical Pilates classes can be universally applied to a range of activities done on a daily basis.

Who Can Perform  Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant women and the elderly. People suffering from lower back and neck pain (strains, sprains, disc issues, or post-surgery), prenatal clients suffering from pregnancy-related aches and pains, can all benefit from Clinical Pilates.

Stages of  Clinical Pilates

Every client that joins Breathe for Clinical Pilates will go through a specific process to ensure that the right routine is designed to support the development of maximum body control, flexibility and strength and improve overall joint mobility. Client history will first be analysed and the Pilates exercises should be given the green light by medical professionals. Our instructors will then understand your goals and assess your range of movement and strength. Once all assessments are complete, Clinical Pilates classes will be conducted in a pain-free range in our Breathe studio. A home exercise programme will also be provided to support the rehabilitation.
