Client Stories: Jeanne
This International Women’s Day, we chat with Jeanne Samuel who’s survived cervical cancer, how she coped, and shares how she overcame the experience.
Hi Jeanne! Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Jeanne. I am 40 years old and I work in the Finance function in the banking industry.
Could you share with us one of the most challenging seasons you had to go through as a woman?
I was diagnosed with cervical cancer at 39 and had to undergo a radical hysterectomy. That meant an abrupt end to my dreams of becoming a mother. The removal of some pelvic lymph nodes during the surgery for further testing also resulted in post-operative weakness in my left inner thigh.
I’m so sorry. How did you overcome this?
My Catholic faith helped me, knowing God would not give me a cross heavier than what I can bear and He is always there with me. On a physical level, I recognised that I may never quite be the same but it is ok and I can still make the best of what my new body can achieve.
Can you share a few ways to help, support, and care for those who might be going through the same situation?
I think first and foremost, there is a need to acknowledge your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Journaling is a good way to do that. Once your thoughts and emotions are clearly spelled out, you can objectively tackle each one to see how they can be best dealt with.
What are your hopes surrounding women and the conversation of similar hurdles in the future?
While motherhood can be one of the greatest experiences in a woman’s life, that need not necessarily be the epitome of a woman’s identity. There is so much more to what a woman can be, even if she is not or never going to be a mother.
